A brief history of the Carrera chronograph
Before the appearance of TAG Heuer, there was TAG Heuer. The TAG Heuer brand was founded by Edouard Heuer in Switzerland in 1860. With the inheritance of the family business, TAG Heuer enjoys a good reputation in manufacturing precision movements and top-quality pocket watches.
In 1962, the founder’s great-grandson Jack Heuer took over the company. The Carrera chronograph was developed and launched in 1963 by Jack Heuer as the company ’s head. The design of this watch takes full account of motorsport and is named after the famous dangerous car Carrera Panamericana.
Jack Hoya, the man behind Carrera [/ caption] Although Carrera’s early models used manual winding mechanical movements, Heuer is a development of automatic chronograph movements. TAG Heuer teamed up with Breitling, Buren and Dubois-Depraz. The Swiss watchmaker’s union jointly launched the automatic chronograph movement in 1969. Chronomatic.
TAG Heuer named its automatic chronograph movement Calibre11. It powers the first automatic Carrera automatic chronograph (also TAG Heuer Autavia and TAG Heuer Monaco chronographs). Thanks to the new movement, the chronograph button remains on the right side of the case, while the crown of the barrel moves to the left. TAG Heuer offers both manual and automatic versions of Carrera.
Later, in the late 1970s, the quartz version joined the lineup. According to TheTheDash, there are about 110 Carrera watches produced from the 1960s to the 1980s. In 1982, Jack Heuer sold his company due to the turbulent “quartz crisis” of the Swiss watch industry. In 1985, TAG (Avant-Garde Technology) acquired the company, and the watch company was renamed TAG Heuer.
TAG Heuer Carrera returns
Carrera was not part of the first ten years of TAG Heuer, but it changed in 1996. TAG Heuer has launched three versions of the first Carrera chronograph, which even includes the original Heuer logo. Facts have proved that Carrera’s re-issue was very successful, paving the way for a strong return.
LVMH acquired TAG Heuer in 1999, and the new management saw Carrera’s potential to quickly add it as a permanent model. Today, Carrera has become the midstream a-pillar of the TAG Heuer product catalog. As a result, there are countless versions of iconic watches.
